Re: The Vanquished Gods: Science, Religion, and the Nature of Belief
Tue, March 15, 2005 - 3:25 AMSounds interesting, but hardcore, closed minded christians will not accept new ideas. There is a man at my job that believes the bible tells him that the earth is only 6,000 years old. I tell him it's time to get out of the caves. -

Re: The Vanquished Gods: Science, Religion, and the Nature of Belief
Tue, March 15, 2005 - 7:41 AMThe validity of certain religious books is rarely a rational or logical discussion. That's the assumption I begin with when talking about someone with certain religious beliefs. If it were a rational discussion it would have happened years ago and the debate would be over and the people would have moved on to the real problems facing humanity.
I think the dialog only starts by asking what religious faith gives a person. Or why do they *need* to believe or what ideas or emotions keep them *wanting* to believe? Personally, I think of it like a mental illness of sorts. I know that sounds harsh but the only reason it's not treated as such is because the majority of the world are afflicted by it. For example, if 90% of the world were schizophrenic, the non-schizophrenic would be the ones that seemed abnormal.
I joined this tribe in hopes of learning more about the historical accuracy and fallacy of the bible so I could be better informed if questioned about the subject.
